africanDRONE
Drones For Good.
We are an African non-profit empowering civic drone pioneers across the continent. We believe that drones -- on land, in the air, and under the sea -- give citizens powerful new ways to better understand their world and to improve public accountability.
africanDRONE seeks to empower local pilots through a self-help network that offers seed funding, skills development, resource sharing, advocacy, and networking opportunities for members. We are incubated and supported by Code for Africa (CfA), the continent’s largest network of civic technology and data journalism labs, with teams in 21 countries.

We partner with Africa’s leading newsrooms and journalism organizations to host drone camps in cities throughout the continent. This allows drone professionals to interact with journalists, share experiences, gain insight, apply for grants, and work on projects that would not otherwise be possible.
Drone Camps
Drone Camp: Cape Town
In Cape Town, South African journalists and civil society organisations explored mapping, storytelling and inequality-focused drone journalism, alongside regulation and safe operations. This first national drone camp introduced newsroom participants from the country’s media to hands-on flight and practical reporting applications.
Drone Camps: USA
africanDRONE delivered drone camps across the United States with partners including Google News Lab, the University of Nebraska, Poynter, and the University of Oregon. African practitioners trained U.S. newsrooms, advancing cross-continental learning and safe, professional drone journalism practices.

africanDRONE, Code for Africa and Workstation Lagos hosted a drone journalism camp in Lagos, training local journalists and community mapping experts in safe drone use, aerial storytelling, community mapping and data skills to strengthen reporting across the city.
Drone Camp: Nairobi
In partnership with IPAEA (International Press Association of East Africa) africanDRONE hosted a drone workshop and flight demonstration in Nairobi in July 2025.
